Chennai Airport is located on the Grand Southern Trunk Road (NH 32) at Meenambakkam and Tiruslam at a distance of 21 km from Chennai city centre. Being located on a major national highway, the Chennai airport is well-connected by road to all major cities of Chennai. Being the fourth busiest airport after Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, it has the capacity of handling twenty million passengers a year and 400 aircrafts every day. The airport has international and domestic flights terminals and facilities for passengers and cargo transport. All terminals of the airport complex are linked to facilitate free movement of goods and people.
The Airports Authority of India owns the Chennai airport.
The domestic terminal of Chennai airport is terminal 1. Terminal 1 is also popularly known as the Kamraj Terminal. The terminal has been named after the state’s former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. The terminal serves flights to more than 20 destinations within the country of India. The airport provides special terminal facilities to host 600 pilgrims during Hajj.
Terminal 1 or the domestic terminal of Chennai airport has four levels of distribution
Several airlines that connect the city to all major airport cities of India operate from terminal 1 of Chennai airport. These include Indigo, Spice Jet, Air India, Jet Airways, Jetlite and Kingfisher.
The first and second levels of terminal 1 of the airport offer facilities for passengers’ aid and comfort, which include:
Terminal T1 of Chennai airport is well-connected by metro, bus, cabs, auto and rail.
AC minibuses from the airport leave for CMBT every half an hour. Four buses of MTC also serve the airport on two routes of Anna Nagar and Egmore. 18 bus lines are available on an hourly basis which reaches the city centre in 45 minutes. Several other lines also pass through the airport bus stop but may not stop without signal. Regular buses are available outside the Chennai airport terminal building. From GST road, several buses also ply towards main city centres.
Cabs are lined outside the exit of the terminal. Prepaid taxis from Chennai airport are available round the clock at moderate, government fixed taxi fares. Metered auto-rickshaws can also be hired from the auto lines for shorter distance commute.
Chennai airport is served by Chennai Airport Metro connectivity. Metro transit can be availed from Chennai Airport Metro Station into the hearts of Chennai city or till city outskirts.
Chennai Suburban Railway Station nearest to Chennai airport is Tirusulam Station at a distance of 2 km from the airport. Chennai Beach line is available from Tirusulam that provides commute up to Park Railway Station, city centre Chennai. Trains can be availed from city centre Park Railway Station to Chennai Central Railway Station. The frequency of trains is good, and available from early morning till late evening at a frequency of every 20 to 40 minutes. Travel time from Tirusalam to Park Railway Station and Chennai Central is only 30 minutes. However, total travel time can be 1hr to 1 hr 30 min due to changeovers.
All major airports of the country have connectivity to Chennai airport through scheduled flights operated from the airport domestic terminal complex.
